Learn to Nordic Walk at Wallington – 2 February 2025

LearnToNordicWalkWallington - LearnToNordicWalk Feb2025 3

This was our first Learn to Nordic Walk session at Wallington for 3 months, because of the recent storms.

We welcomed 9 people to try Nordic Walking at this beautiful property.

The start

We met in the Visitors Centre, filled in a PARQ (a form to let us know of any physical issues, allergies and emergency contact details. We handed out poles, which were set up to each individual’s height.

Three of our regular walkers Sue, Belinda and Tina very kindly helped us out, as Julie is recovering from an operation.

The training

We headed to the grassed area in front of the clock tower.

We teach the  INWA 10 Step Method ™. At the training sessions we teach the first 5-6 as this gives you the basics to Nordic Walk. We also teach the double poling technique which is helpful for going uphill.

Most of the group took to the technique very easily. Although some needed some extra tuition.

The train exercise is a great way of showing the extent of shoulder movement. This exercise is done in pairs and is always a laugh. As always this was the case.

The walk

In our experience once people have the basics it is good to put it into practice. We always have a short walk afterwards.

When at Wallington, we start by visiting Elementree – an oak tree which came down during Storm Arwen and has been carved by Tommy Craggs, using only chainsaws in the exact spot where it fell. We then passed by the Owl, another sculpture by Tommy Craggs.

We walked through the Walled Garden, which is still in dormancy. This area ends up in bright colours throughout the year.

Unfortunately we were unable to use the stepping stones (following the recent storms) so we walked up the road towards Paine’s Bridge.

We crossed Paine’s Bridge very carefully as it is a busy bridge before following the River Walk.

The path has a few inclines and declines which gives everyone an ideal opportunity to really feel the benefits of Nordic Walking.

After the session Martin led a cool down session with stretches before some of us visited the tearoom for refreshments.

We hope you all enjoyed the session and walk and we hope to see you at one of our walks.
