Description

Ford Village, Ford Moss and Roughting Linn

FordMoss - FordMoss Mar2026 JB 12

This is a lovely walk starting in Ford Village.  We walk through Ford Moss, and visit the stunning Roughting Linn waterfall.

We start in Ford Village and set off through Fordhill wood.  Then we head across some fields and down a hill towards Blackcrag Wood.  From here we follow a path across another field and up to Ford Moss.

Ford Moss

Ford Moss extends over about 150 acres on top of a hill  overlooking the surrounding area.  Since 1968 it has been a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). In 2000 it was further classified by the European Union as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The Moss itself is dangerous to walk on, but there is a 2 mile path around it, giving excellent views of the surrounding countryside as well as the Moss itself.

We will also go out past Goats Crag Hill, to the waterfall at Roughting Linn.  If we can find them we can also see the rock art in the Roughting Linn area.

This is a photograph which Chris entered into a competition in 2020 where she won first prize.

Back to Ford

We will return back to Ford Moss and then take a different route back to the village.  If we are lucky, we will see the Exmoor ponies, that live on the nature reserve.  They are wild but are used to people and will approach them, probably because they think they’ll get an apple.

As well as the ponies, we will pass Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre.  Often there are heavy horses in the adjacent fields and it allows you to see the size of these magnificent beasts. The tearoom may be open.

After returning to the start, we will visit The Ford Village Coffee Shop for refreshments  There is also the opportunity to visit Lady Waterford Hall, Ravn Clay and Old Forge Antiques.

Hope to see you there.
