Ford and Etal
The Ford and Etal walk, as the title suggests, takes us from the small village of Ford to the village of Etal, before returning to Ford via a different route. The walk takes us past some beautiful and interesting places.

The start – Ford Village
Ford is a small village however there are lots of interesting things to see.
St Michael & All Angels Church has the stone screen at the grave of Lady Waterford.
Lady Waterford Hall is well worth a visit. It was the former village school and is home to an amazing series of murals from the Pre-Raphaelite period. It is free to visit with donations welcomed. There will be an opportunity to pop in and investigate at the end of the walk.
From Ford, we walk along a path to Hay Farm.
Hay Farm
We walk through the Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre which has the largest herd of rare breed Clydesdale Heavy Horses, which we may be lucky enough to see.
Although they also have a huge sheep, which is a sight to behold.
To Etal
We set off away from Hay Farm and towards Etal. This is along field edges and on to the road to Etal.
Etal
Etal village dates back to the 16th century. The village is very pretty and the Castle equally impressive. It’s a lovely peaceful place. We will probably take a past the castle on the way down to see the ford on the River Till.
When we leave Etal, we will retrace our steps to Heatherslaw.
Heatherslaw Corn Mill and Light Railway
Our walk takes us past the Corn Mill and Light Railway at Heatherslaw. Heatherslaw Mill is a water powered corn mill on the Ford and Etal Estate. It is a working mill, and a very interesting place to visit. There are also a few little shops here. It is a very interesting area and there will be an opportunity to stop for a short while.
From Heatherslaw, we will take a path through fields and along the river, back towards Ford. We will return to Ford through grounds of Ford Castle.
Ford Castle
Ford Castle is now part of PGL Holidays and, unfortunately, not open to the public.
Back to Ford
When we get back to Ford Village we will visit The Ford Village Coffee Shop.
