Thank you Julie for a lovely day out. Having only previously done the training at Wallington was concerned that this walk might be too difficult. However the pace was manageable and the whole group were very friendly and supportive. We were fortunate with the weather and the scenery lovely . Hope to see you again soon

Nordic Walking after hip replacement

Thank you very much for an enjoyable refresh on the Beginners Strolls with Poles walk last Sunday at Wallington.

I have found that the Nordic poles have increased my confidence after my recent hip replacement and have helped me to extend the distance I can walk comfortably.

Wallington Hall

First time at Wallington Hall and first time with ‘Strolls with poles’ really enjoyed my first experience of Nordic Walking today, it takes a bit of getting used too but I think by the end of the walk I was managing much better. Wallington hall was a great place for this first walk of mine but hopefully it won’t be the last. The weather was perfect for a walk which did make all the difference, in short a great day out and I can feel my shoulders and legs hurting so I must have done something right, thank you Julie.

I have been joining Strolls with Poles for some years now when visiting Northumberland, which is quite often. The walks are always well organised, the locations excellent in the stunning scenery and with always a lovely cafe at the end. Julie and Martin have lots of knowledge about Nordic walking, the area and are excellent guides. I can thoroughly recommend joining them for a walk.

What is Nordic Walking?

We are often asked “What is Nordic Walking?”

Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking style.  It uses a technique that is similar to the upper body action of cross country skiing.  Indeed this is where Nordic Walking stems from.

Nordic Walking becomes a whole body exercise which can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what your age and fitness level.  From the gentler walking for health to the more athletic Nordic running.

More than 10 million people in over 40 countries around the world enjoy this outdoor activity all year round.

How will Nordic Walking benefit me and my body?

Nordic Walking poles share the effort between your upper and lower body and combine the simplicity and accessibility of walking to create a full body low impact workout.

The benefits of Nordic Walking are:

  • it can release tension in your neck and shoulders
  • it will improve your posture and gait
  • you can strengthen your back and abdominal muscles
  • it can tone problem areas such as the upper arms (bingo wings) and abdominal muscles
  • it reduces the impact on your joints
  • It can be very effective for people with mobility issues or those recovering from illness or injury
  • you can burn from 20% up to 46% more calories compared to walking without Nordic Walking poles
  • it actually feels easier than normal walking, particularly uphill because the effort is shared between the upper and lower body

We specialise in enjoying fun, relaxing and friendly walks in a variety of beautiful locations in the North East of England.  We sometimes even venture further afield, taking part in challenge walks and away days.

As a reward we always end (sometimes during) our walks enjoying tea and cakes, in local tea rooms and cafes.
