Start

Amble is situated on the Coquet Estuary and is commonly known as “the friendliest port”.  Situated just off the coast at Amble is Coquet Island, which is an important RSPB seabird sanctuary and home to 30,000 pairs of seabirds, including Puffins and 90% of the UK population of Roseate Terns.  Boating trips are available, from Amble, to view the seabird colonies.

We leave Amble by walking along the South Jetty and then past Pan Point and along the coast.

The coast

Warkworth - WarkworthJan2018M-5

The short section of coast between Amble and Hauxley is beautiful.  Lovely beaches and undulating dunes provide great views out to sea.  Of particular interest are the wonderful views of Coquet Island, home to thousands of seabirds but most famous for the breeding colonies of Puffins.

Hauxley Nature Reserve

Hauxley Nature Reserve is situated at the North end of Druridge Bay. The lake here attracts many species of birds.  Birdwatchers (including Anne) make good use of the many hides situated around the lake, allowing them to enjoy being as close as possible to the birds. As well as this, the views down the length of Druridge Bay are spectacular.

When we arrive at Hauxley, we will go to The Lookout Cafe, in the Visitor’s Centre.  This is a lovely place, with a large window overlooking the lake.  There are even binoculars available for anyone to use.  Alternatively, you can enjoy a snack.  We recommend the soup and cheese scone.

At Hauxley Nature Reserve, you can see many species of ducks and geese and sometimes swans, as well as a multitude of other flora and fauna.

After our break at Hauxley Nature Reserve, the walk then returns the same way  back to Amble and a visit to The Old Customs House.

We hope you can join us.
