The start
This is a short walk from the Wylam car park. We will start by following the old disused railway. This is an amazing track to Nordic walk along, it is flat and has been very kindly cleared by the local community.
George Stephenson’s Birthplace
We walk to George Stephenson’s birthplace. Unfortunately now closed to the public. We then turn up towards Rift Farm, this is an incline but an excellent way to feel the benefit of poles.
West Wood
After we pass Rift Farm we are on a quiet road for a short time before crossing a stile into West Wood, this is a very small area but absolutely stunning.
Close House
After the West Wood we come to Close House Golf Club. We follow the public footpath through the golf course and the area changes a few times around here, woodland, roads and of course the golf course, which we skirt around the outside
The river
Once through the golf course we come back to George Stephenson’s birthplace and turn left to take us to a small gate which takes us high above the river. Again the scenery is stunning and there is always the chance to spot wildlife or funghi in this area.
We return to the car park via the disused railway line.
Hope to see you there,
Julie and Martin
