The Schil

If you like Cheviot walking then The Schil is a must to visit.  It’s not the easiest summit to reach but it is most definitely worth it.

We start at Hethpool, in the car park on the South side of the village.  We will walk back through the village and follow St Cuthbert’s Way, along the Elsdon Burn, up towards the border fence.  Here we will cross into Scotland and walk alongside the fence, following the Pennine Way over White Law.  At Black Hag we will recross into England, for a short distance until we reach The Schil itself.

Like many of the Cheviot hills, the summit is on the Scottish side of the border.  So, we will cross into Scotland again to reach it.  The summit is one of the more rocky outcrops of the Cheviots, giving plenty of shelter.  Perfect for a lunch stop.

Leaving the summit, we will continue along the border fence until we reach Red Cribs.  This part of the walk provides great views of the West side of The Cheviot, especially the Henhole, one of the classic ascents of The Cheviot.

The descent from Red Cribs is into the College Valley, which is renowned for its natural beauty.  We will follow this valley back to Hethpool via Mounthooly and back to the car park.

How to get there: Follow the A697 from Wooler and then take the B6351 at Akeld. Follow the A6351 to Westnewton, where there is a signpost for Hethpool. Follow the road up and to the left through the farm. Keep following this road for 2 miles until you come to a T-Junction. Take the left turn, not the one with the cattle grid. Follow the road into the village and past the houses. Continue on over the cattle grid and the car park is on the left.

Parking: Northumberland National Park car park at Hethpool.
