Description
Talkin Tarn and Gelt Woods
This is a new area for us, but it is a lovely place. Talkin Tarn is a serene tarn, close to Brampton. The tarn and the area around it, including Gelt Woods, is wonderful to walk in.

The start
We are starting the walk at Talkin Tarn car park. This is a Pay & Display car park, with plenty of spaces. Head towards the tarn and the buildings, where the toilets area, and a tearoom/giftshop.
We take a path to the north of the lake, towards Brampton. We join a minor road, which crosses the railway from Newcastle to Carlisle, and head towards the footpath to Gelt Woods.
Wreay and Unity
The path takes us to the small village of Wreay. We take the next path to the south and pass another hamlet named Unity. This leads to Gelt Woods.
Gelt Woods
Gelt Woods, and the adjacent woodland, occupy a steep sided valley along the River Gelt. This river runs from the Pennines to the River Irthing, at Ruleholme.
The paths through Gelt Woods are beautiful and filled with wildlife. Parts of the woods were once a quarry and there are also remnants of Roman occupation.
Middle Gelt Bridge
The village of Middle Gelt Bridge is situated alongside the large viaduct, carrying the railway to Carlisle. From here, we will continue to follow the river upstream, but on a riverside path out of the woods.
Greenwell and High Gelt Bridge
The route continues along the River Gelt, past Gelt Mill and through Greenwell to High Gelt Bridge. We ccross the bridge and then take a path up to Hill House Farm. The farmhouse is beng renovated and has some interesting features.
Talkin village and back to the tarn
After walking through the farm, we take paths across fields to the village of Talkin. There is a lovely country pub here, called The Blacksmiths Arms. We can have refreshments here.
We will then take a road to the Tarn End House Hotel, where we join the tarn side path and head back to the start of the walk.
We hope you can make it.
