The start – Etal

Etal village dates back to the 16th century.  The village is very pretty and the Castle equally impressive.  It’s a lovely peaceful place to start a walk.

We set off out of the village and along the road towards Ford, but turn off onto the path taking us away from the road to Heatherslaw.

Heatherslaw Corn Mill and Heatherslaw Light Railway

Our walk firstly takes us through the Corn Mill and Light Railway at Heatherslaw.  It is a very interesting area and we may have time to stop for a short while.

Heatherslaw Mill is a water mill on the Ford and Etal Estate.   It is a working Corn Mill and a very interesting place to visit.  There are also a few little shops here.

Ford Village

From Heatherslaw, we follow the riverside path to Ford, where we will cross the River Till and walk up into the village.  Ford is a small village however there are lots of interesting things to see.

St Michael & All Angels Church has the stone screen at the grave of Lady Waterford.

Ford Castle is now part of PGL Holidays but unfortunately not open to the public.

Lady Waterford Hall is well worth a visit.  It was the former village school and is home to an amazing series of murals from the Pre-Raphaelite period. It is free to visit with donations welcomed.

Hay Farm Heavy Horse

We walk through the Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre which has the largest herd of rare breed Clydesdale Heavy Horses, which we may be lucky enough to see.

Although they also have a huge sheep, which is a sight to behold.

Depending on when we arrive back at Etal, we will visit the Lavender Tea Rooms or The Black Bull pub.

Hope to see you there.
