Crimdon Dene
The Crimdon Dene Walk was suggested by John, one of our walkers. He runs this route and thought it would be a good walk too. It’s a circular route from Crimdon, along the coast, into Castle Eden Dene and back to the start along a disused railway line.

The start
We start at Crimdon Beach Car Park and follow the Coast Path along the coast to Blackhall Colliery. If we are lucky we might even get to walk on the beach for part of it.
Castle Eden Dene
Just after Blackhall Colliery we will turn inland into Castle Eden Dene. This is one of the gems of this area. The Dene is a nature reserve and has over 450 different species of plants. It is the largest semi-natural area of woodland in the region. It is part of what used to be the wildwood that covered most of britain.
We will walk through much of the Dene before leaving the it towards Castle Eden village. From here we cross fields to reach a disused railway.
Back to Crimdon
The railway is now the Haswell to Hart Countryside Walkway. We follow this back to Crimdon Dene and walk back down to the Beach car park.
