Description
Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve

Funding – Sport England
We have secured funding from Sport England to offer 23 fully funded sessions of Nordic Walking in the beautiful Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve (NNR). The sessions are open to everyone with a specific focus on those who are less active due to health issues or funding.
Benefits of Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking has a lot of health benefits for everyone no matter how fit they are:.
Nordic Walking is a great low impact all over body workout. However don’t be scared there are no squats, lunges or weights involved.
The format of the session
We will teach the basic technique of Nordic Walking. After the teaching we will set off on the walk which is up to 2 miles.
The format for the session will be:
- Provided with a set of poles (properly set up according to your height);
- A short introduction about Nordic walking, its benefits and it’s origin;
- Instruction for beginners using the INWA 10 Step Method ™;
- A 2 mile walk in Castle Eden Dene NNR; and
- A cool down/stretching session.
Beginners to Nordic Walking often have questions about it, so we have tried to answer some of the typical questions that people ask. You can find these in the “Questions” tab above, so why not take a look.

The start
We will meet outside the Cafe in the Dene. After completing forms, we will go to the grassed area where I will teach the technique, before we head off around some of the trails around the Dene. The paths are very good for Nordic Walking.

We will visit various interesting parts of the Dene, including various geological areas.
The views are stunning all the way around this walk.
Castle Eden Dene NNR
Castle Eden Dene NNR is the largest area of natural woodland in the North East.
The reserve covers 221 hectares of woodland and lowland grassland, where post-glacial melt waters have carved out some spectacular limestone cliffs and gorges.
The steep crumbling sides of the gorge are made of soft magnesian limestone.
Castle Eden Dene is home to an extraordinary variety of birds, more than 450 species of plants, and mammals including roe deer and fox.
Our walk will take us around some of the many paths however there may be some small hills.

After the session we will visit the Cafe in the Dene for tea/coffee.
I hope you can join me.
