Description
Nordic Walking in Rothbury for people with Parkinson’s or other long term health conditions
We are continuing our Nordic Walking sessions at the beautiful Rothbury Riverside for people with Parkinson’s. We have been asked to extend this to include anyone with any other long term health condition or just those who would like to walk with others but they aren’t able to walk distances.

Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking is an excellent exercise for people with Parkinson’s and many other health conditions?
Nordic Walking for Parkinson’s specifically can potentially slow the progression of the condition and improve various motor and non-motor symptoms.
Nordic Walking can help you maintain a better posture and keep you more upright. At the same time, taking longer strides can gently stretch your limbs and keep your body rotated. This can help loosen you up and improve your coordination.
If you feel that you tend to walk slower and take smaller steps, Nordic Walking creates a steady beat to improve your pace. It can also make exercise fun and social when done in a group.
Not sure if it’s for you
Here is a review from a current participant:
“The dedicated Parkinson’s sessions with Strolls with Poles have made a real difference for us. They’ve provided great opportunities to meet others with PD and share experiences while actively taking part in some very enjoyable exercise. In a word – brilliant!”

What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking is a great low impact all over body workout. However don’t be scared there are no squats, lunges or weights involved. We also have places where you can stop and rest if needed.
Beginners to Nordic Walking often have questions about it, so we have tried to answer some of the typical questions that people ask. You can find these in the “Questions” tab above, so why not take a look.
There is also information available on the Parkinson’s UK website – Nordic walking and Parkinson’s | Parkinson’s UK

Who leads the sessions
Julie is the instructor who leads the session. Julie is the owner of Strolls With Poles, has been Nordic Walking since 2005 and has been a British Nordic Walking Instructor since 2012. She has a lot of experience in teaching Nordic Walking and has undergone training with both Parkinson’s UK and British Nordic Walking.
Julie is ably assisted by Sue at these sessions. Sue is a Walk Leader and helps ensure the safety of the sessions.
The sessions are always relaxed, fun with a chance to chat. There are plenty of places to stop and take a breath. We also go for a coffee afterwards.
Format
The format for the session will be:
- Provided with a set of poles (properly set up according to your height);
- A short introduction about Nordic walking, its benefits and it’s origin;
- Instruction for beginners using the INWA 10 Step Method ™;
- A short walk; and
