Christmas Walk (Simonside)
The Christmas Walk is our last walk of the year and a particular highlight. This year the walk will mark our 2nd year anniversary of starting Strolls with Poles.
The start
We will set off from Rothbury towards Whittondean, following a route up to Lordenshaws. Before long we are treated to great views over Rothbury. The low sun makes the view even more dramatic.
Lordenshaws
Close to Lordenshaws, there are examples of ancient cup and ring markings. Lordenshaws car park is the usual start for a walk up Simonside, but the walk wouldn’t take long from here, hence the reason we start from Rothbury. From Lordenshaws, we take the main path up the side of Simonside. The first high point we reach is the Beacon. There is a long flat section to the base of Dove Crag.
All that remains here is the short walk up to Dove Crag. This is where the decorated tree is. Unfortunately, the original tree was deemed not to be native and was removed. However, a very ingenious person brought a replacement tree up last year.
Putting the Christmas into the Christmas Walk
At the tree we will enjoy homemade Mulled Wine, mince pies and hot chocolate, and maybe even sing some carols. There might even be a light dusting of snow, if we are very lucky. This is the Christmas Walk after all. Please feel free to bring something to share with the group.
The way back
The return is via the wood and Whitton Hillhead farm, before joining the path we took earlier, to walk back to the car park.
We hope you can join us.
